Were you wondering what the pillows spelled out when I showed you the sneak peek?! Well here they are!
They spell out PLAY!
Awhile ago, my friend Beth emailed me and told me she want to spell out her daughter, Avery’s name in pillows for her playroom. She told me she really liked these pillows, but she said, “before I even contemplate paying $48 per pillow (yikes!) do you think you can make them for cheaper than that?”
I said – Yes! Please don’t pay $48 per pillow! Let me see what I can do!
Well, I am embarrassed to admit but time started slipping away and I hadn’t made the pillows. It was busy season and then time to move and then the big news came – Beth found out she was prego! With TWINS!! Well I decided it was fate that I hadn’t made the pillows yet. I mean it doesn’t make much sense to make pillows for a playroom for THREE kids that say Avery! So we decided to spell out PLAY and I got to work!
Here’s a quick rundown of how I made them.
Note: I am not a sewing pro so for all you seamstresses out there – don’t judge me!
Two yards Target (Heavy Canvas) Fabric
Wonder Under
Fun Fabric for your letters
I created a template on my Mac for the letters. I adjusted the font size so that each letter was between 6 – 7 inches tall. I printed them and cut them out.
Then I took my pretty fabric for each letter and ironed on the Wonder Under and cut each letter out. Actually my mom helped me with this step. Gotta give her some cred!
I cut 8 – 13in x 13in squares from the Target Canvas fabric, so that I had 1 inch all the way around for the seam.
I decided to add a ruffle instead of a border around each letter. I love me some ruffles, but these were actually the first ones I have ever made! Here is how I made the ruffles…
For my machine, I had the tension set at 9 and the stitch length set at 5. I then used those same settings to sew the ruffle on to the pillow square. But before I sewed on the ruffle, I laid out the letter and the ruffle and measured the same distance from the edges for each pillow so that they were consistent. Then I peeled away the other portion of the wonder under and ironed on the letters.
I stitched around the letter and then changed my settings back to the ruffle settings and sewed on the ruffle where I wanted it.
Then I just put the two wrong sides of my pillow together (with the letter and ruffle facing the inside) and sewed around all four sides/corners, leaving a small opening at the bottom, middle of the pillow. Then I flipped the pillow right side out, stuffed my pillow form inside and stitched the small opening closed with my machine!
Ta-Da! Done! Plus I did all of this to the lovely tunes of Glee! Ha![]()
Beth, I hope you love the pillows! I can’t wait for the twins to come!!
